So I e-mailed Steve Jobs…

Thanking him for the Macintosh computer.

Hopefully he doesn’t bother to read this, because several posts down I spew hatred toward the iPod Touch/iPhone.

Below is the e-mail I sent. You may choose to call me a kissass, but the fact is the Macbook is the one piece of hardware that has made my life considerably easier.

Mr. Jobs,

I’ll be honest with you. I -really- didn’t like Apple for quite a long time. Whenever the word “iPod” was mentioned I instantly associated it with “elitist snob” and fought the urge to throw the nearest blunt object directly at whoever mentioned it. I looked at my old Apple IIGS and sighed because Apple went “metrosexual hip” on me. It made me quite sad.

But then the years passed. I picked up various older Mac equipment and started playing, and I found that OSX’s interface was amazing. I found that the hardware was, frankly, the most aesthetically pleasing I’ve ever used (and to be fair, this is referring to an old PowerMac G4) and the entire experience of using a Mac was really an interesting change from building custom computers. Well, crap, I started liking these things!

Nowadays I work for a small computer service firm in Chicago (http://www.techangels.com shameless plug), and when my customers are at the stage in life where they need a computer, the first thing I will tell them is to get a Mac. I’ll tell them that once you get past the initial learning curve, a Mac will inevitably be the easiest computer you’ll ever use. And it’s true. Over the past year I’ve set up hundreds of Macbooks and iMacs, and the only complaint I’ve really ever received about them is “why haven’t you told us about these earlier?!”

So even though there is a high degree you will never see or respond to this, or worse, that this will be read by some secretary who will get endless delight from this, I’m writing to say thank you, Mr. Jobs. You’ve made a lot of people happy and you’ve personally made my job incredibly easy.

Very Sincerely,

Dan Nelson
